Now, onto the Gig itself. This track is to be a location specific musical score providing the audible context for a classic gaming environment, the haunted cemetery. A place of death and festering evil, the spirits who linger here have an unbounded hatred for the living, seeking to corrupt body and soul and eventually, swell their own ranks by destroying any living brazen enough to enter their realm. As the first piece of direction, let's be clear. We are NOT going for a campy, silly or soft, "Disney" evil. Rather, think: The Exorcist, IT, The Grudge, House on Haunted Hill so watch those ghost moans and groans, those are too easy to come off cheesy.
First let's talk about the setting's environment. BattleBards tracks are meant to be very specific to a type of person or place. As a cemetery, we'¢re naturally going to be outdoors so as is often the case, a layering of a soundscape or a sprinkle of SFX for context is likely to find a good spot here. The occasional cawing of a distinct crow, the rustle of leaves on sparse trees and brush, the fall of a tombstone, all of these and more can help ground the listener to the environment. Careful, we don't want to create a source track here so the use of a soundscape or sound effect should be done for accenting.
In terms of soundscapes and sound effects, what's going to be front and center is the 'haunted' aspect of haunted cemetery. Distant ghostly wails, sickly croaking, echoing demonic laughter, hidden dying screams, the trick here is to keep the evil presence just at the periphery of the listener. That tension, that sense of suspense of walking within a tainted area where horror lurks is that key emotion we're looking for. What that means is that we don't want ghosts jumping out and attacking the listener. The closest we can get these vengeful spirits is perhaps a dark whisper in the ear.
The meat of this track is obviously the musical composition. Again, we're going for dark, spine chilling terror. We want any person listening to this track alone and in the dark to run for the lights and phone a friend, that's the level of freak out sought. The range of instrumentation is wide open.
The following tracks have been identified as providing a good basis for inspiration into the feel, energy, and direction this track requires. Please note that there will be no tolerance for stolen work, so make sure that submitted auditions are original compositions and that you have 100% rights to use and sell any samples or loops you embed.
Midnight Syndicate - Harbored Souls
In terms of soundscapes, you're going to get a very good feel of what we're looking for here. Now, there are some specifics here that don't apply like the creaking wood but this track provides a sense of that subtle evil, lurking, feel. This track does such an amazing job portraying that 'evil just beyond sight' place of great evil mindset that's important to this Gig.
Midnight Syndicate - Graveyard
What's great here is the overall ghostly feel of the piece. However, this piece takes the horror element and pairs it with an airy sense of mysterious and sadness which moves the track away from a purely horror piece. Still, this is a direction that can be explored, adding a sprinkle of forlorn in the piece to add another dimension to the cemetery.
The Grudge - Part VI (20:28 to 25:08)
Awesome suspense, awesome subtle effects for accents, good orchestration. The track gets a bit over the top in parts but the sense of suspense and evil stays throughout. As an added note in regards to the movie, The Grudge, the use of unique vocals for ghost sounds is incredible. In particular, the famous cat/boy meow / scream and the droning in The Grudge 2 found here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5poOduTF5pM @ 1:57 to 2:05) is absolutely spine chilling. And that's the point here, be inventive with the sounds of terror!
I wish I could point to more pieces that come close to what we're looking for but for the most part, a vast majority of tracks just aren't dark and sincerely scary enough to be worth a mention. If you know of a piece that you think carries with it what w're trying to convey and you're wondering if it's a good source of inspiration, let me know and I'll take a listen and provide some feedback.
The track must be no less than 3:00 in length and must loop cleanly. If you have any questions, please shoot us over a message through Audio Catch, we'll try to answer all of it, don't be shy. We can't wait to hear how you bring this nether realm to life! Good luck!!!
